How nutrition affects the skin
1979
Hodges, Robert E.
The condition of skin and hair reflect general health and nutritional status. Almost any state of malnutrition will result in abnormalities of the skin and mucous membranes, but the signs of nutritional deficiency may be general or specific: for example, pellagra, a deficiency of niacin, is evidenced by photosensitive dermatitis. With protein-energy malnutrition, hair loses its luster, skin pigment may be patchy or lighter, and the facial skin becomes stretched. Vitamin A or C deficiencies may result in a decrease of sebaceous secretions and also a loss of hair at or below the skin surface. With biotin deficiency, the skin becomes scaly and "crackled." The effects of vitamin B6, folic acid, pantothenic acid, the fat soluble vitamins and mineral deficiencies are also discussed.
