Position of The American Dietetic Association: nutrition intervention in the treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa

A position statement and summary paper developed by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) is discussed concerning its stance on the use of nutritional interventions for treating the eating disorders, anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). It is stated that it is the ADA's position that nutrition intervention and education be integrated into the approach of the professional therapy team treating AN and BN patients during the assessment and treatment phases of outpatient and/or inpatient therapy, nutritionally adequate when appropriately planned. The characteristics of these eating disorders are described.(wz)
