Effect of type of propagation on earliness of flowering and fruiting in 'Tonda di Giffoni' and 'Daviana' cultivars

In Chile, hazel trees for the plantation of orchards are mainly obtained by the nurserymen by the mounding layer with acceptable results regarding the rooting percentage. Layerage is used because other propagating techniques such a cottage and graftage have never been consistently nor commercially possible. However, this type of plant material presents generally a long unproductive juvenile period (3-5 years) depending on the cultivar, quality of vegetal material and also an important time to obtain relevant production of catkins (pollenizers) with abundant pollen and commercial yield. The aim is to reduce the unproductive time, and improve the production of pollen and nuts. Scions of ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ and some pollenizers were grafted on a clone of ‘Chilean Barcelona’ (BA-5) selection used as rootstock. The experimental orchard was planted with plants of one year old in 2010, trained into single trunk and it was spaced 5.0×4.0 m (500 plants/ha) with an auxiliary irrigations system. The statistical design was a randomized complete block with 4 replications, and 10 trees per replication and treatment. As a preliminary result of the study, it was found that the graftage technique can shorten the unproductive period of hazelnut cultivar ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ about 1-2 years and to anticipate the reproductive period in the pollenizers cultivar with abundant production of catkins and pollen with statistically differences in contrast with the own-rooted plant material.
