Dietetic technicians
1983
Solomon, Cynthia Ann
Dietitians can delegate routine tasks to dietetic technicians in order to focus their attention on tasks that require higher skill levels. However, the dietetic technicians' responsibilities and capabilities must be understood. Two levels of dietetic paraprofessionals (dietetic assistant and dietetic technician) exist. The dietetic technician is the more highly trained and can assume more responsibility. Dietitians must ensure that the dietetic technician meets ADA (American Dietetic Association) training, and educational requirements, and has appropriate clinical knowledge and experience before being assigned to patient care. Four ways to employ a dietetic technician are: taking diet histories; providing routine diet instructions; teaching in public health programs; and overseeing daily clinical care in facilities not required to document nutritional assessment. A course outline is presented. (kbc)
