The role of ethylene in berberine production by Thalictrum minus cell suspension cultures

Ethylene regulates berberine production in cell suspension cultures of Thalictrum minus, by activating the biosynthesis of berberine from the key intermediate (S)-reticuline. In the late stage of culture, however, ethylene promoted the formation of bound polyphenolics, which was associated with cell browning.
