The effect of tri-iodothyronine (T3) on protein turnover and metabolic rate

Wolman, S.L. | Sheppard, H. | Fern, M. | Waterlow, J.C.
A group of obese female patients who had been hospitalized for weight reduction and showed a relatively poor weight loss on an energy-restricted diet (2 MJ/day) were selected for 2 weeks of triiodothyronine (T3) treatment (0.020 mg 3 times/day). Whole body protein turnover was determined by urine analysis of N-15-labeled ammonia and urea from a single dose of N-15-labeled glycine at the beginning and end of T3 treatment. T3 dosing increased both the weight loss rate and urinary nitrogen. The results indicated that accelerated weight loss from T3 dosing occurred from lean body mass rather than from body fat.(wz)
