Zinc and fetal alcohol syndrome: another dimension
1986
A brief review of recent reports and related studies concerning the relationship between zinc (Zn) status and fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in newborns notes that infants exhibiting FAS and low Zn plasma levels have hyperzincuria, as observed in adult alcoholics. It is concluded that the combination of Zn deficiency and alcohol consumption in pregnant women has a greater adverse effect on the fetus than either one alone. Further study is needed to determine whether improvement in Zn status in alcoholic women reduces the incidence and severity of fetal birth defects.(wz)
