Cellulite: Hard to budge pudge
1980
Fenner, Louise
Cellulite is a term first used in European health spas referring to fat on women's thighs and buttocks, and by the mid-1970s everything from pills to massages, brushes, toning lotions and $475 12-session salon treatments were being touted to reduce cellulite. Although cellulite-reduction promoters claim that it is extraordinary and needs to be attacked by extraordinary means, a Medical Society of the County of New York paper stated flatly, "...fat is fat...it maintains its common characteristics." Cellulite appears different because certain cells have the ability to store enormous amounts of fat--and then bulge. However, there are no easy answers to either cellulite or any fat. Dieting and exercise--and the discipline needed to accomplish them--are the ways to take pounds off. A review of a visit to cellulite treatment salon and an explanation of why "cellulite" is not yet in the dictionary are included.
