Field Test of a Microprocessor-Based Grain Loss Sensing System
1990
Larson, R. G. | Leonard, J. J.
This work describes the field testing of a micro-processor-based system for measuring the actual grain loss from the straw walkers of a combine. The system used four grain impact sensors located underneath the straw walkers to provide data on grain separation rates along the walkers. These data subsequently were fitted to exponential curves which were integrated from the end of the walkers to infinity in order to calculate the grain loss. Field testing was carried out in a barley crop and losses calculated from the sensor data were compared with measured losses. The sensor data gave a good fit to separation curves that decayed exponentially towards the rear of the walkers. Losses calculated from these curves correlated well with measured losses.
