Help us help ourselves
1980
Fedyna, Bill
The message coming from the Native Americans (Indians, Alaskans, Aleuts, and Eskimos) reflects their pride and self-reliance: Help us help ourselves. Of the 1 million Native Americans, half live on reservations, and poor health and nutritional status have led to early death, high infant mortality, diabetes and obesity. These problems have difficult solutions due to the variety of food and nutrition habits among the different cultural groups. The National Native American Food and Nutrition Policy Conference led to optimism regarding cooperation between the federal government (particularly the USDA's Food and Nutrition Service) and the diverse ethnic groups. Conference recommendations included: promoting breast feeding in the WIC program, implementing a faster food distribution program, and encouraging Native Americans to develop their own nutrition education materials.
