The Dieting dilemma
1983
Two out of 3 women report they are on a diet at any given time. Teenage girls are even more vulnerable to nutritionally unbalanced fad diets. Weight control diets should not: encourage rapid weight loss; compromise growth by severely restricting intake; or encourage long term patterns of weight loss and gain; but should include exercise. Eight evaluative questions should be asked before beginning any diet. What type of diet plan is it? What (potentially harmful) gimmicks are used? Is the plan nutritionally adequate? Is the plan practical? Is the weight loss goal realistic? Is a lifestyle change necessary to maintain weight loss emphasized? Is a maintenance plan explained? Are the underlying principles of the diet applicable to all eating situations? Four popular diet products (e.g., starch blockers, fasts, appetite suppressants and spirulina); 4 diet programs (Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Diet Center, and Overeaters Anonymous); and 3 popular diet books (Pritikin's Permanent Weight-loss Manual; I Love New York Diet; and The Southampton Diet) are evaluated.
