Dietary regulation of small intestinal disaccharidases
1988
The final stage of carbohydrate digestion occurs on the luminal surface of small intestinal epithelial cells called brush border membrane or microvillar membrane. In this membrane, several glycosidases which hydrolyze di- and oligosaccharides originating from ingested nutrients are present. These glycosidases are referred to as disaccharidases. The activity of disaccharidases is known to be modified by various factors such as age, nutritional status, hormones, pancreatic secretions and dietary composition. This review deals with the variation of disaccharidase activities which occurs in response to dietary composition. Among the topics discussed are metabolism of disaccharidases on the small intestinal epithelial cells, basic variation of disaccharidase activities and effects of variation of carbohydrate intake on disaccharidase activity.
