A diagnosis of glutaric aciduria Type II was made in the case study of a young woman, 12 weeks pregnant, who suffered repeated attacks of hypoglycemia in conjunction with higher serum levels of free fatty acid without ketosis, fatty infiltration of the liver, hepatic dysfunction and proximal myopathy. Organic acids were present in increased amounts in the urine. Carnitine deficiency in muscle and liver were thought to be a secondary biochemical abnormality. The patient improved on a diet of frequent high-carbohydrate meals.
