Response of two different strains of broiler chicks to experimental infection with Eimeria tenella

Broiler chicks from Cari-Vishal and Cobb broiler lines were challenged by gavaging sporulated oocysts ofEimeria tenella, to study their response to infection. From day 5 to 9 post infection (Pi), droppings were collected for counting OPG. The results indicated that there was an increasing trend of OPG up to day 7 pi and the peak level of OPG was found at day 7 pi. The mean OPG differed significantly (p<O.05) between Cobb and Cari-Vishal birds at days 5 to 9 pi. Mean OPG count was found to be highest in Cobb broilers as compared to Cari-Vishal. No mortality was observed in any of the treatment groups. It can be concluded that Cobb broiler line is more susceptible than Cari-Vishal broiler line to coccidial infection under similar environmental and management conditions.
