The biosynthetic precursor of the neurotoxic amino acid beta-N-oxalyl-L-alpha,beta-diaminopropionic acid (ODAP) is beta-(isoxazolin-5-on-2-yl)-L-alanine (BIA), a prominent metabolite only during the seedling stage of grass pea and some other closely related legumes. The cotyledons are presumably the site for this biosynthetic step. A small scale synthesis of [14C]-labelled O-acetyl-L-serine is reported.
