The case of the missing calories revisited

Prentice, A.M. | Sonko, B.J. | Goldberg, G.R. | Murgatroyd, P.R.
This Letter to the Editor by Prentice et al presents evidence against the hypothesis of Lands and Zakhari (The case of the missing calories) which suggests that alcohol energy is dissipated as heat without performing any useful physiological work. The authors discuss underestimation of alcohol consumption as a source of bias; the lack of a biological need for a futile cycle for alcohol metabolism; and the lack of measurable thermal losses.
