Fluoridation and mortality--an epidemiologic study of Pennsylvania communities

To gauge the impact of fluoridation on mortality rates, a dozen Pennsylvania communities with fluoridated water and a dozen without were studied. In comparisons between the communities, regardless of the level of fluoridation, mortality for all causes and for diabetes specifically, was significantly higher in the nonfluoridated communities. Mortality from cerebrovascular diseases did not vary. No clear evidence suggests that fluoridation under controlled administration adversely affects either diabetes or overall mortality. Earlier studies have shown no relationship between fluoridation and breast cancer, mortality from all causes, heart disease, cancer and nephritis. In one study, mortality from intercranial lesions was slightly higher in the fluoridated sample.
