Pollen of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) frequently germinated up to 90% and formed pollen tubes with the modal length of 2.5 mm and the longest in the range from 5.0 to 10.0 mm while submerged in media which contained H₃BO₃. yeast extract, and Ca(NO₃)₂.4H₂O at 50, 200, and 2,000 ppm, respectively, and sucrose at 35% w/v. The optimum sucrose concentrations for germination and elongation were 40 and 20%, respectively. The maximum germination and elongation occurred in the temperature range between 24 and 30 C. Germination and elongation were inhibited by agar (1%), KCN (10 ppm), and ⁶N-benzyladenine (20 ppm).
