Nanotechnology has potential to revolutionize agricultural and food systems. Among several potential nanotechnology applications, development of nanoscale biosensors for food safety and security is emerging. This article discusses the use of nanotechnology for food safety. Aspects considered include: food pathogen detection with nanotechnology; nanobiosensors for Salmonella detection; SEM and TEM images of Au/Si nanorods; fluorescence images of Au/Si nanorods – Alexa 488; Salmonella detection; food toxin detection with nanotechnology; AFM tip functionalization; ricin immobilized on nanosubstrate; tip and substrate modification; ricin detection; and future nanotechnology research for food safety.
