This chapter reviews the data suggesting an influence of nutritional deficiencies in the cause and progression of alcoholic liver disease. The following topics are included in this discussion: 1) the relationship between nutritional status and severity of liver disease; 2) digestion and absorption; 3) metabolic abnormalities; 4) lipotrope-deficient diets; 5) malnutrition; 6) the resemblance of the histopathology of alcoholic liver disease to other diseases such as morbid obesity and diabetes mellitus; 7) the effect of nutritional therapy on morbidity and mortality of alcoholic liver disease; and 8) liver regeneration.
