The purpose of this chapter is to review data on the relationship between short stature and subsequent risk of disease and death. A framework for analysis of risk factors for morbidity and malnutrition is presented. The immune defense system; the incidence, severity and duration of infection; mortality; and factors coexisting with stunting that may increase risk of morbidity and mortality are examined.
