Aroma volatile emissions and expressions of aroma-related genes in jasmonate-treated apple infected by a pathogen

The effects of the jasmonic acid derivative n-propyl dihydrojasmonate (PDJ) on the volatile emission and on the expression of the aroma-related genes in 'Tsugaru' apples infected by a pathogen (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) were examined. The fruits were dipped into 0.4 mM PDJ solution before being inoculated with the pathogen and were stored at 25°C for 10 days. The application of PDJ induced ethylene production in the infected fruit. The major volatiles in 'Tsugaru' apples are aldehydes, esters, alcohols and α-farnesene. Esters and α-farnesene were induced by the inoculation, and PDJ application stimulated these emissions. The pathogen inoculation induced the expression of the alcohol acyltransferase gene (MdAAT) and α-farnesene synthase gene (MdAFS) 24 h after inoculation. Apples to which PDJ was applied before pathogen inoculation showed the highest increases in MdAAT and MdAFS expression, followed by apples that received the inoculation only, with the untreated controls showing the lowest expression. These results suggest that PDJ application before pathogen inoculation influenced the aroma volatile emission, which was mediated by ethylene production, and induced greater expression of aroma-related genes compared to pathogen inoculation only in apples.
