The diagnosis and treatment of hyperactive children remain highly controversial subjects. Traditionally, hyperactivity was associated with minimal brain damage or dysfunction. Its origins remain unclear. However, the syndrome is present from early life and at different ages different symptoms emerge. Affected children are excessively restless, have limited attention spans, and show signs of impulsive behavior. As the children reach adolescence they become frustrated, have poor self-images, and are generally poor students. While children with mild hyperqctivity respond well to counseling and behavior modification techniques, many require drug therapy. Ritalin, a stimulant, is the most common drug prescribed. However, the value of the drug when used for extensive periods of time or when prescribed for the very young is still uncertain.
