Urinary excretion and dietary intake of magnesium in girls
1981
Huber, H.G. | Disney, G.W. | Mason, R.L.
Magnesium excretion in first-void urine specimens of 100 fasting girls, 9, 10 or 11 years old, was not significantly correlated with dietary magnesium intake. Intakes were calculated from 2 24-hr. dietary recalls obtained from each girl each year of 3 consecutive years. Black subjects excreted more creatinine than whites. No significant differences in urinary magnesium:creatinine ratio were observed among race/income groups. White girls had higher dietary intakes of magnesium than blacks. Most girls' intakes were 67-100% of RDA, although at age 11 35.3% of subjects consumed less than 67% of the RDA for magnesium and may be at risk of deficiency. Dietary magnesium intakes positively correlated with protein, phosphorus and calcium intakes of the girls. These findings suggest that the first-void urine specimen is not useful in nutritional assessment of magnesium status.
