The biosynthesis of geranyl diphosphate from dimethylallyl diphosphate and isopentenyl diphosphate has been examined using the recently characterized geranyl diphosphate synthase from Pelargonium roseum. Dimethylallyl diphosphate was stereospecifically added to the si-si face of the C-C double bond of isopentenyl diphosphate with the stereospecific elimination of the pro-2R hydrogen of isopentenyl diphosphate.
