A magnetic-particle based immunoassay (IA) for atrazine was compared with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the monitoring of atrazine in coastal sea waters of varying salinity. Water samples were measured directly by IA and also after solid-phase disk extraction (SPE) by GC-MS. Correlations were established between the data obtained by IA directly from water samples, at various salinity levels (from 0 to 35 g/L) and from GC-MS following SPE. In the Ebre river water the atrazine levels determined varied from 90 to 225 ng/L whereas their common cross-reactants, deethylatrazine and simazine, were detected at concentrations varying from 0 to 110 ng/L and from 0 to 150 ng/L, respectively. At salinity values between 0.5 and 8 g/L, the atrazine levels varied between 20 and 120 ng/L.
