Practical assessment of body fat composition
1978
Some of the simpler indirect methods used to determine body composition are assessed. The more widely used anthropometric methods for determining body fat content involve comparisons with life insurance tables. The body mass index (weight divided by height squared) correlates well with body fat content, and its use is preferred to the use of insurance tables. Major problems are encountered with using fat fold thickness measurement. Body circumference measurements to assess fatness are more valid in obese individuals.
