Potential use in olive nurseries of olive cake and compost from animal manure or urban rubbish

In the two-year period 2006-2007, an experiment was carried out to evaluate the advantage of replacing, totally or partially, peat with olive cake or composts derived from animal manure (“Stab bio”) or rubbish (“Composta”) in the substrates used to grow olives in nurseries. Observations were made regarding the substrate characteristics (water holding capacity, pH and salinity) and tree physiology (leaf chlorophyll and photosynthesis), growth (height of trees and weight of root, trunk and shoots) and mortality. The most extensive use of olive cake or composts (60% of the substrate) increased the salinity of the substrates and plant mortality. When a 30% fraction of olive cake or composts was used, good tree growth was observed. The results suggest that up to 30% olive cake and/or composts can be used to replace peat in substrates used for olive tree production in nurseries.
