A new endothermic hydrocarbon fuel with density of 0.851 g/cm³ (EHF-851) was proposed taking account of the energy density and heat sink of hydrocarbon fuels for the thermal management of advanced aircraft. Sub- and super-critical pyrolysis of EHF-851 was investigated by the electrically heated tube test at 650−750 °C under 0.7–6.0 MPa. The effect of operation parameters (flow rate, pressure and fuel temperature) on the heat sink and detailed pyrolysis products were presented. The heat sink of EHF-851 is 3.32 MJ/kg at 750 °C (6.0 MPa, 2.67 g/s), which is 25 % higher than that of JP-10 but 8 % lower than that of JP-7. The formation of pyrolytic cokes was significantly inhibited attributed to the hydrogen donor effect of decalin in the fuel.
