Five areas for future investigations of nutritional support in the management of renal failure are reviewed and discussed: 1) the role of urea in uremic toxicity and in the nitrogen economy of the uremic patient; 2) the association of protein and carnitine malnutrition and hyperlipidemia with renal failure; 3) divalent-ion abnormalities (Ca; Mg); 4) nutritional management problems in children having chronic renal failure; and 5) the unproven potential of nutritional therapy for reducing the rate of progression of chronic renal failure.
