Extract: There is a need to raise questions about the direction of research in interregional competition and agricultural transportation, and to identify current topical issues in these fields. Interregional competition studies attempt the impossible by trying to measure comparative advantage and, in the process, create biased estimates of where industries should locate. An "opportunity gradient" approach is recommended. Agricultural transportation has been approached by measuring effects of exogenous transportation system changes on agricultural markets. More attention needs to be given to basic transportation market supply and demand relationships, recognizing transportation as an agricultural input market.
