Gastric banding, a surgical method of treating morbid obesity: Preliminary report
1983
Bø, Olav | Modalsi, Oyvind
The protocol, results, and success of a new, simple surgical procedure ("gastric banding") for correcting morbid obesity are described. The procedure does not involve the operative risk and potential complications associated with surgically opening the gastrointestinal tract, and resulted in a mean weight loss of 36.5 kg (29.5% of body weight) in 15 very obese (50% or more overweight) subjects (11 females, 4 males). The procedure affords the additional advantage that the artificial stoma and upper and lower compartment gastric mucosa can be examined post-operatively by gastroscopy. (wz)
