Obesity in young Dutch adults: I, socio-demographic variables and body mass index

A study of the prevalence of obesity investigated the simultaneous contribution of socio-demographic variables (age, marital status, parity, education level, main daily occupation, urbanization, religion, church attendance, father's occupation, size of family origin, birth order in the family) to relative weight (body mass index, BMI). The study group consisted of young adults living in a mixed urban-rural Dutch community. BMI median values were 23.1 and 21.8 kg/square-meter for 2092 females and 1765 males, respectively. Prevalence of severe obesity (at or above a BMI of 30.0) was 2% in both sexes. It was found that, while other correlations with BMI were observed, the most important socio-demographic determinants of BMI were age and socioeconomic status. (wz)
