Effect of varying protein and energy intakes on nitrogen balance in Indian preschool children

Nitrogen balance in 4 preschool Indian children demonstrated the effect of varying protein intake at 2 levels of energy intake, and indicated that protein intake meets nutritional requirements even when needs are not met. One energy intake met recommended levels and the other was deficient. Results indicated that the relationship between protein intake and nitrogen retention was curvilinear; from this data, protein requirements at adequate or deficient energy intakes were calculated. At low levels of energy intake, the protein requirement increases by 20%. However, even at these low levels, the usual diet of vegetable proteins eaten by Indian preschool children provides adequate protein.
