The objective of the study was to measure an association between food selection of elderly denture wearers and their masticatory ability. Masticatory ability and dietary intake were measured for 310 edentulous subjects 60-89 years of age. Masticatory ability was determined using the Swallowing Threshold Test Index. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to collect dietary data. The Canadian Recommended Nutrient Intakes were used to assess adequacy of intake. In general, dietary intakes in this population appear to be adequate with the exception of vitamin D, folic acid and calcium. Of the subjects, 52% had an adequate masticatory ability. There was no statistically significant association between dietary adequacy and masticatory ability.
