Current scenario and pathology of duck diseases - A systematic review

Duck rearing is a supportive livestock industry due to its demand for egg, meat and above that many species of local ducks are also valued as ornamental birds. In the Wetland ecosystems of South Cental Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, duck farming as for generations remained the source of livelihood for a sizeable population. Even though, duck farming has amply supported such farming communities; certain years have been marked by disease outbreaks of various natures that have seriously dented the efforts and viability of the industry. The most important diseases affecting ducks fall under the broad category-viral, bacterial, parasitic and fungal diseases. Of this, duck viral enteritis, duck cholera, colibacillosis, riemerellosis, avian influenza and aflatoxicosis are considered as most important. This review systematically analyses and summarizes the status and pathology of important diseases prevalent in India.
