Babies should begin to eat rice cereals and fruit and vegetable purees at about 4 months of age. Introducing solid foods before this age may cause infant obesity, while introducing them later may result in chewing problems. A plastic teaspoon with smooth edges, a plastic cup or bowl, a feeding beaker, and a bib are required utensils; these items should be stored in a sterilizing solution. At 5 months, babies may eat egg yolk, other cereals, and strained baby foods. When babies are 6 to 7 months old, they can be given minced meats mixed with potato puree. At 8 months, babies may enjoy 2-course meals with the family. Infants aged 9 to 12 months should eat the same foods as the family, though the foods must be cut up. Baby foods should be prepared at home.
