Antibiotics in our food supply
1985
A brief overview article discusses the case against and for the use of antibiotics in foods with regard to human safety. The concern is that meat derived from livestock raised on antibiotic-treated feeds may result in a situation in which bacteria that might have competed with Salmonella have been killed off, allowing the Salmonella or other antibiotic-resistant bacteria to flourish. This represents a potentially serious concern in that 40% of the antibiotics produced in the US are fed to animals, including poultry as well as livestock. In 1977 FDA sought to ban the use of 2 antibiotics used in animal feeds (penicillin and tetracycline), and an FDA report on these is planned for March 1985. Arguments of the proponents and critics of such bans are discussed. (wz)
