Food Guide Pyramid replaces the basic 4 circle
1992
Secretary of Agriculture Edward R. Madigan unveiled the "Food Guide Pyramid" at a press conference on April 23, 1992. The new graphic aid, is the product of a collaboration among nutritionists, graphic designers, and communications researchers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have adopted the new graphic because they found it to be the most effective device to convey their best advice on nutrition. USDA and DHHS say that the pyramid is a readily comprehensible graphic aid for communicating fundamental dietary principles and current knowledge of the basic nutritional needs of individuals.
