Nutrient analysis information for decision making

The USDA Nutrient Data Base (NDB) contains more than 3500 food items and 20 food components. It is a standard reference devised to determine nutrient composition of food. Results are published in USDA's Handbook No. 8. NDB was developed for 5 purposes: (1) to determine nutrient content of foods; (2) to assist in the development of educational materials that describe food choices; (3) to aid individuals who need special diets; (4) to determine the nutrient content of US food supply; and (5) to calculate individual or group nutrient intake. Analytical methodology is based on methods established by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. Limitations of the data base include not being able to use the statistical data for evaluating metabolic studies, or for determining nutrient losses in foods due to preparation, or for nutrition labeling. To maintain their value, data banks must be continually updated as new information is obtained. The data base is available on magnetic tape, and many industrial and academic nutrient data banks are based on it. Commercial applications of the data bank include recipe and product development, labeling compliance, evaluation of product changes, and substantiation of advertising claims. (kbc)
