Fabrication of robust and self-healing superhydrophobic PET fabrics based on profiled fiber structure

In recent years, superhydrophobic fabrics with excellent durability and self-healing properties have attracted more and more attention by virtue of meeting the demands of complex environments. This paper reports a strategy of fabricating robust and self-healing superhydrophobic polyester fabrics based on the profiled fiber structure. The dodecyltrimethoxysilane modified TiO₂ (DTMS-TiO₂) was synthesized as the coating material and the fabric composed of tangerine-segments profiled polyethylene terephthalate (TSP-PET) fibers was chosen as the substrate. After pretreatment using low-temperature plasma, the TSP-PET fabrics were coated with DTMS-TiO₂ though a one-step dip-padding and curing process. Superior to fabric with normal circular cross-sectional fibers, the modified TSP-PET fabric exhibits higher water contact angle, abrasion resistance, laundering durability, chemical stability and UV durability, which may attribute to the hierarchical micro and nano structures and concealment of hydrophobic layer in the grooves of fibers. Moreover, regardless of severe physical or chemical damage, the modified TSP-PET fabric can restore its superhydrophobic performance. This rendered the profiled fibers to be a better choice to prepare superhydrophobic textile with high contact angle, excellent durability and self-healing property for various applications.
