A new lignan, gossypifan, isolated from a petrol extract of the aerial parts of Jatropha gossypifolia has been characterized as alpha-(trans-3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)-beta-S (3,4-methylenedioxybenzyl)-gamma-butyrolactone by spectroscopic methods.
