Putting calcium into perspective for your clients

Osteoporosis affects more than 25 million people in the United States, mostly women, resulting primarily in fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. The slender, inactive woman who smokes is most susceptible. Genetic background and lifestyle are implicated as risk factors. Lifetime calcium intake is an important consideration, especially in periods of rapid growth and in the elderly years. Many consumers need guidance in meeting calcium needs with food naturally rich in calcium. Use of supplements is also appropriate.
