The author explains his views on the value of dietary therapy of diabetes. First, with patients receiving treatment with hypoglycemic medication, it is advisable to be consistent in carbohydrate and caloric intake. Second, weight reduction should be achieved through energy intake and energy expenditure. Third, a low saturated fat diet is advisable. Fourth, based on recent studies, diabetic patients with established nephropathy should restrict dietary protein intake.
