Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is common, important, and often badly treated. The treatment of NIDDM (figure) hinges on dietary measures, backed up by sulphonylureas, biguanides, and insulin. Various adjuncts are available and several new therapeutic avenues are being explored.
