Extract: A large number of tame forage species grow well in many areas of the humid Southeast. consequently, cow calf producers face considerable latitude in choosing among forages to include in their feeding systems. that choice depends largely on the perceived comparative advantage of alternative forages, not so much in producing quantity of beef as in producing profits. the best forage combination and per acre profit levels may vary substantially among farms in response to climatic and soil differences. hence, the value of land for cow calf production, which is dependent on profit generating potential, is in turn responsive to the same variables. this study examines the sensitivity of profit maxmizing forage combinations, their profit levels, and potential land values for cow calf production to major climatic and soil differences in North Carolina.
