Background and status of work on continuing competency requirements
1985
The historical development and current status an American Dietetic Association program for assuring the continuing competency of professional registered dietitians, guaranteed by evidence of self-improvement through continuing education, is reviewed and discussed. The program was initiated in 1969 as a voluntary program of professional registration, and continuing education (CE) guidelines were revised in 1974 with an emphasis on the "quality" of 75 clock hours of CE required per 5 year period. In 1980-81, the Commission on Dietetic Registration became a member of the National Commission for Health Certifying Agencies and a draft of "essentials for Dietetic Recredentialing" was developed. The 1974 guidelines for self-study offerings as criteria for CE prior approval were revised in 1983-84. Specifics concerning the CE criteria are discussed. (wz)
