A computer vision algorithm was developed based on a thinning technique for evaluating shapes of embryos in an automated somatic embryo production system. Normally shaped embryos thus selected will be further processed for transplants or artificial seed production. Carrot was used as a model plant. The "skeleton" of the embryo image was induced by "thinning" the image, and two parameters describing the shape of the skeleton were defined and used as selection criteria. These criteria were chosen because normal embryos have Y-shaped skeletons. The results were comparable to those based on human judgments. The developed algorithm gave results independent of the size and position of the embryo image.
