Nutrient intake of lactating women participating in the Colorado WIC program
1979
Argeanas, Sia | Harrill, Inez
A comparison of the nutrient intake of 16 lactating women, some of whom were participants in the Colorado WIC program, was undertaken to evaluate the benefits of nutritional intervention. Dietary information was collected within 6 weeks postpartum and again 2 months thereafter. Food intake of the 11 WIC participants improved during the 2-month period, whereas mean intakes of energy and 6 other nutrients by 5 nonparticipants had declined. However, nutrient intakes of nonparticipants came closer to meeting RDAs than those of WIC participants at the first interview. Two months later, average food intake of all subjects provided 2/3 of RDA for 10 nutrients. During both periods, inadequate intakes of iron and vitamin A were most often observed. These findings indicate that WIC food supplements do help maintain higher nutrient intakes during lactation in low-income nursing mothers.
