Use of health foods by the elderly

A survey of 354 elderly subjects from 15 randomly selected New York City senior citizen centers assessed the use of health foods by the elderly. The study revealed that about 39% had shopped in health food stores at some point in time, but only about 11% did so on a regular basis. In addition, the median amount of $4 spent on health foods was less than half the amount spent of an average sale and represented only about 8% of the food dollar of the participants. Health food use by the survey population correlated significantly with education level, mean income, and distance to a health food store. (wz)
